Certification Standards

Established in 1944, the NSF International is a non-government not-for-profit organization that helps develop standards for public health and safety. In 2009, with a consensus from participating trade associations, organic growers, organic care retailers and manufacturers, the NSF produced the American National Standard for the classification of personal care products containing organic ingredients. Desert Essence is committed that Organics products will follow and merit the NSF certification. Thus, Desert Essence Organics products bear the “Contains Organic Ingredients” labeling standard shown to the left, requiring at least 70% certified organic ingredients.
The USDA organic seal verifies that the product has 95% or more certified organic content. If the label claims that it was made with specified organic ingredients, you can be sure that those specific ingredients are certified organic.
Ecocert is an inspection and certification body established in France in 1991 by agronomists aware of the need to develop environmentally friendly agriculture and of the importance of offering some form of recognition to those committed to this method of production. For a cosmetic product to be labeled Ecocert, a minimum of 95% of all plant-based ingredients in the formula and a minimum of 10% of all ingredients by weight must come from organic farming.
